Our History

In 1962, a meeting in Stan Green’s garage on Augusta Street, Umina, sparked the creation of the original Ocean Beach Surfing Association (OBSA). Under the leadership of Kerry Purdon, the club’s inaugural president, OBSA thrived competitively. However, by the end of the 1966 season, the Vietnam War saw members drafted, others joining larger associations like the Central Coast Surfing Association or Sydney-based clubs, and ultimately, the OBSA disbanded.

Fast forward to the late 1980s, a renewed passion for longboarding led the Ocean Beach Boardriders Club to include a longboard heat at their contests. The event’s growing popularity inspired the formation of the Ocean Beach Malibu Club (OBMC) in 1989. The club retained the ‘Ocean Beach’ name to honour its predecessor, with original OBSA members such as Geoff Greenup, Harry Wall, John Young, Dennis ‘Chicka’ Knock and Kerry Purdon helping to shape the OBMC.

On the last Sunday of each November, we celebrate our heritage with the Long John Old Mal Comp, where members past and present compete on boards drawn at random. This cherished tradition culminates in December, with the winner announced at our annual Presentation Night.
